Steelville was founded in the very early 1800s and has served as a center of commerce for the area as well as, the county seat of Crawford County since its incorporation in 1835. We are known for the natural beauty of the area, from our scenic waterways to our National Forests to our majestic bluffs and serene meadows. We call ourselves the floating capital of Missouri and visitors come from around the state and the country during the spring, summer and fall to enjoy the spring fed clear waters of the Meramec, Huzzah and Courtois creeks. Whether relaxing in the comfort of a local bed and breakfast or resort or camping on the creek bank, there is something to entertain the whole family.
Steelville is proud of our contribution to the art and history of the area. From the two museums which are stocked with donations from many local families to the two city parks where you can enjoy the ducks and a quiet picnic at Hoppe Springs to the new city park where you can enjoy softball and a swim in the pool. The Meramec Music Theatre features local talent and special guests throughout the year and is known for its very special patriotic Veterans Day shows. We are also proud to announce a recently created Arts Council that has been established to promote our local artists and the skills and pieces that they produce.
Each year, Steelville hosts our ever growing Freedom Fest around the Fourth of July. This event features music and local crafts and food booths and an evening fireworks display. Then there is our well known Harvest Festival and Rodeo the week after Labor Day in early September. This brings in cowboys and cowgirls from Missouri and surrounding states who compete for money and points at the rodeo on Friday and Saturday evenings. Gibbs Care Center residents never miss these annual events where they always look forward to seeing old friends and new visitors.
